The tartan plaid is a strong trend for the 2013 winter in Europe, almost a “must have” of the season and it’s presents in brands like Zara, Moschino, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Pepe Jeans, Ikks, Guess, I Pinco Pallino, among others. Tartan is a checkerboard pattern of prints, composed of different lines and different colors, we can mention the frequent use of this pattern in kilts, typical Scottish clothing.
In the history of Western fashion, the plaid origin can be traced back to the Iron Age (700-50 BC) in Northern Europe, especially in Germany and Denmark. The origin of geometric prints is always associated with the Scots, but according to the textile historian E. J. W. Barber, these prints date back to the ancient Celts, who used to wear garments of woven with plaid pattern in yarns of wool, 2X2 crossed cloth (diamond shape).
As symbols of Scottish clans, the tartans began to be used only in the eighteenth century. The lack of technology, essential for the huge amount of different combinations of tones that classify the various clans, made impossible the homogeneous dyeing of the yarns, necessary for the manufacture of the complex plaid patterned of tartans. However there are evidences of the existence of tartans dating from the 3rd century BC.
The tartan word means “lightweight woolen fabric”, and it has been used by various brands, so it is a strong trend for this winter, we will see it not only in many brands but also in many different forms and combinations, such as mixed with floral, striped and different tartans in the same part or the same production.
